Lighsheets prove a hit with astrophotographers

We have recently had a flurry of orders from Astrophotographers from as far afield as Russia and Scandanavia where the skies are perfect for such an activity. The lightsheets are perfect for astrophotography given their uniform lightlevels and thinness. The lightsheet provides an excellent solution to capturing the underexposed pictures of space and magnifying the images to obtain detail.

EL panels used to record valuable watermarks

Sandy Thomson a member of the British Association of Paper Historians BAPH has spotted a valuable use for EL light sheets in the photographing of watermarks. And whats more his research found Poster Power UK represented the best value for moneyIn his research paper Sandy wrote Electroluminescent panels ELP are thin 0.5 mm or 0.020 and flexible so that they can be inserted behind the page in a book with a watermark that is to be photographed. The ELP is flexible enough to follow the contours of the book which is especially useful when the book is old and perhaps in a delicate condition. It is not necessary to open the book to a full 180 degrees. Also as will be shown only low level lighting is used and certainly no flash is required. This is indeed a book friendly method of recording watermarks. Preserving the book from any possible damage must be paramount. This method can of course also be used for loose sheets.PIRIE watermark backlit using an EL panel with no computer enhancement.

Modern technology meets ancient history

We recently had a n enquiry from an antique book collector who wanted to use an A4 EL light sheet to place behind the pages of his manuscripts the idea being to light up the watermarks and photograph them The EL light sheets were perfect for this application given their thinness and the fact that they remain cooltothetouch. We thought this was a unique and interesting use of this technology
